Those still on the dole need their incomes protected

7 Jul 2000

Responding to today's live register figures Tony Monks General Secretary of the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed said "The continued (seasonally adjusted) decline in the Live Register is to be welcomed. Hopefully many people moving into decently paid, sustainable employment. But there are still over 100,000 people reliant on social welfare payments. In the face of growing inflation, we have to protect the value of their payments. The paltry £4 dole increase in Budget 2000, is now only worth 26p extra a week."

The INOU reiterated their reminder to Government that if recent inflation curbing measures fail, the impact of inflation on basic social welfare payments will have to be reflected in Budget 2001.

Mr.Monks continued "The Government have given a commitment to enter pre Budget consultation with all the social partners and we have already marked their cards that we will be demanding a budget that delivers equity to low income families."
