Essential guide - book for unemployed people launched
15 Oct 2000
Sunday 15th October
"Working for Work" - a guide-book for people moving from welfare into work, will be published tomorrow (16/10/00) by the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed. Dermot Ahern T.D., Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs will launch the publication, which is the seventh edition of this highly successful booklet.
Speaking in advance of the launch the Minister said "I congratulate the INOU on this excellent production. The input
of the many independent, voluntary organisations such as the
INOU, in the dissemination of information greatly complements
the work of my Department's Information Section and I welcome
their efforts wholeheartedly. I have always been of the view
that information should not be the sole preserve of Government
Departments and that there is a need for a strong, professional
independent information sector. This presents one of the major
challenges for us in the future - how the information strategies
of the different agencies can be better co-ordinated and
integrated at both local and national level."
"If we are to achieve that new vision, there must be a
willingness on the part of the statutory services to collaborate
and co-operate with the independent information sector. I hope
that my Department has shown a positive lead in this regard and
I think our support in relation to this booklet is a good
example of that co-operation."
Barrie McLatchie, Chairperson of the INOU said " ' Working for Work' is a unique publication which draws together all the options available to unemployed people in terms of training and education, and accessing the labour market. It also gives a comprehensive guide to the social welfare system. 'Working for Work' has been used extensively by individual unemployed people, local centres for the unemployed, and statutory agencies.
In the last three to four years thousands of unemployed people have made a successful transition into the labour market, however there are still many people who face real barriers to getting into work. We believe that we can create a full employment society, where there is no long-term unemployment and where everyone who wants to work can access a decent job. We hope that 'Working for Work' will continue to help people back into the labour market."
'Working for Work' is available free of charge from the INOU: 01 -856 0088, postage must be paid.
