Live Register increases by almost 6,000

An additional 5,760 people signed on the Live Register in December compared to November. This increase was spread across all regions. The Mid- West at almost 6% experienced the largest increase in the month.
“The INOU is very concerned about the level of job losses”, said the INOU General Secretary, Mr. Eric Conroy. Recent figures from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment show that almost 100,000 people suffered redundancies in the last four years. “Given the difficulties faced by various sectors of the economy, particularly manufacturing and the economy’s over-reliance on construction, the INOU is very concerned that these level of redundancies could increase” Mr. Conroy said. “The Economic, Social and Research Institute recently issued a stark warning that a worse case scenario could see the numbers of unemployed people increase by 150%. The Government needs to heed this.” Mr. Conroy added.
