The time to act is now

27 Feb 2009

The Quarterly National Household Survey results for Quarter 4 2008 released today makes for grim reading. The 86,900 or 4.1% reduction in the number of people in employment represents the largest annual decrease in employment since records began.

These figures have yet to take into account the further record breaking numbers of people signing on to the Live Register or made redundant in December and January. "The scale of this increase is unprecedented. It is vital that the Government brings forward initiatives to sustain employment levels" noted John Stewart.

The INOU is calling on the Government to prioritise employment and tackling unemployment. "We must arrest this monumental slide in the numbers of people losing their jobs. Effective initiatives are required immediately to keep people in employment, the time to act is now" John concluded.
