No let up in increase in Live Register
5 Aug 2010
Today's Live Register figures highlight the on-going jobs and unemployment crisis in Ireland' said John Stewart, INOU Co-ordinator. Seasonally adjusted, the Live Register for July stands at 452,500 an increase of 8,500 on the June figure. The standardised unemployment rate is now 13.7%.
The depth and scale of the on-going unemployment crisis demands a co-ordinated and much more rapid response than has been seen to date. To address this appalling situation Ireland urgently needs a jobs stimulus package and a coherent Jobs Strategy that identifies where the jobs of tomorrow will be and ensures that unemployed people are supported to take up the right education and training options to access those jobs.
'Tackling unemployment must become the Government's top priority. We are moving inexorably towards there being half a million people on the Live Register. The implications of the on-going unemployment crisis for individuals, families and communities are stark and urgent action is required to tackle the problem' John concluded.
