On May 31st 2023, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) published the Monthly Unemployment (MU) figures for May 2023. The Monthly Unemployment figures are estimated using trends in the Live Register figures based on data from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), and are subject to revision. The most recent LFS was published by the CSO on May 24th and covered the first quarter of 2023.   

According to the Monthly Unemployment figures 103,300 people were unemployed in May 2023, a drop of 8% over the year or 8,700 fewer people. The Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) was 3.8%, a decline of 0.4 percentage points over the year. 400 more men and  9,100 fewer women were unemployed in May 2023. The Monthly Unemployment Rate for men was 0.1 percentage points lower, at 4.1%, and 0.8 ppt lower for women, at 3.4%. Women accounted for 42% of the unemployed in May 2023, 5 percentage points lower than in May 2022.

In May, 2023, 23,900 people aged 15-24 were unemployed: 10,800 fewer young people than a year ago. Their MUR was 6.9%, 2.8 percentage points lower than May 2022. Over the year, unemployment amongst young men dropped by 7,600 to 12,600, and their unemployment rate was 7.2%, a decrease of 3.9 percentage points over the year. Unemployment amongst young women decreased by 3,200 to 11,300, and their unemployment rate fell by 1.7 percentage points to 6.6%. In May 2023, women accounted for 47% of those unemployed in this age category, in comparison to 42% in May 2022.

The monthly unemployment figures for people aged 25-74 increased by 2.7% over the year to 79,400 people, while their MUR decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 3.3%. In this age category unemployment increased for men by 20% to 47,400, and their MUR increased by 0.5 percentage points to 3.7%. Unemployment declined for women by 15.6% to 32,000 women and their Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) declined by 0.6 percentage points to 2.9%. Women accounted for 40% of those unemployed in this age category in May 2023, a decrease of 9 percentage points over the year.
