New developments to ‘One Step Up’

One Step Up is a project set up as an initiative which promotes the European Agenda for Adult Learning and raises awareness about education and training options, which are available through a website www.onestepup.ie, an online calendar of events and a Freephone Helpline 1800 303 669.

Since the website was launched in November 2013, the project has received 11,189 personal profiles through the One Step Up website, received over a thousand calls through the Freephone Helpline and promoted over 900 education and training events taking place nationwide.

This year AONTAS, who manage the project and who have been assigned the role of National Co-ordinators for the implementation of the European Agenda for Adult Learning (EAAL) carried out a survey with key stakeholders (learners, providers) to get feedback on the usability of the website. The results of the survey were extremely positive. The majority of people found the learner stories ‘powerful or inspirational’ and the contacts to the local Education and Training Boards (ETBs) most useful:  ‘There is a huge amount of information available which can be very confusing as an adult learner...as a result of this website the chances of making more suitable and realistic education choices will be higher’.

The evaluation has informed the recent developments to the website which include shorter, concise FAQs, personalising the homepage with inspiring learners and adding links to libraries within the events calendar. Improved functionality has made the website even easier to navigate .The features to improve data collection will be useful to inform policymakers and stakeholders in the further education and training sector about the needs of learners.

A new events app has been embedded into our AONTAS Facebook page, which means that any event on the One Step Up website will also be promoted on Facebook. Social media has become an effective tool in reaching people and, with 60% of the Irish population on Facebook, the events app will be useful in reaching those most distant from the education and labour market to inform them about education and training opportunity accessible to them.

If you would like further information on the project, copies of our One Step Up promotional material or to submit an education and training event please contact Brid at bgreenan@aontas.com or 01-4068220.

This project is funded with the support of the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union and co-financed by the Department of Education and Skills through SOLAS, the Further Education and Training Authority.
