New Rural Employment Scheme Must Include the Unemployed

8 Dec 2003

The Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed welcomes the announcement of a rural employment scheme, which will provide 2,500 places for small farm holders. The scheme which will by administered by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, is designed to provide income and employment support to participants along the lines of the Community Employment scheme.

‘We ask the Minister to extend the eligibility of this scheme to all unemployed people and disadvantaged groups who are living in rural Ireland,’ said June Tinsley, Policy Officer INOU. ‘The employment opportunities in rural areas are fewer so this scheme could provide a real opportunity for people to gain work experience, training etc. It should not be seen as a substitute for the Community Employment scheme if the eligibility is so restrictive.’
