On September 6th 2023, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) published the Monthly Unemployment (MU) figures for August 2023. The Monthly Unemployment figures are estimated using trends in the Live Register figures based on data from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), and are subject to revision.

According to the Monthly Unemployment figures 111,500 people were unemployed in August 2023, a decrease of 3.5% on August 2022. The Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) was 4.1%, a decline of 0.3 percentage points over the year. 3,100 more men and 7,200 fewer women were unemployed in August 2023. The Monthly Unemployment Rate for men increased by 0.2 percentage points to 4.3%, and decreased for women by 0.7 percentage points to 3.9%. Women accounted for 44.7% of the unemployed in August 2023, 4.6 percentage points lower than in the same month last year.

In August 2023, 38,500 people aged 15-24 were unemployed, 500 more young people as in August 2022. Their MUR was 11.2%, 0.1 percentage points lower than a year ago. Over the year, unemployment amongst young men increased by 13.7% to 21,600, and their unemployment rate was 12%, an increase of 1.2 percentage points over the year. Unemployment amongst young women decreased by 10% to 17,000, and their unemployment rate declined by 1.5 percentage points to 10.3%. In August 2023, women accounted for 44% of those unemployed in this age category, a drop of 5.6 percentage points over the year.

The monthly unemployment figures for people aged 25-74 decreased by 6% over the year to 72,900 people, and their MUR decreased by 0.3 percentage points to 3.1%. In this age category unemployment increased for men by 1.3% to 40,000, and their MUR remained unchanged at 3.2%. Unemployment declined for women by 13.6% to 32,900 women and their Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) declined by 0.7 percentage points to 2.9%. Women accounted for 45% of those unemployed in this age category in August 2023, a decrease of 4 percentage points over the year.
