Building Skills: Free digital learning assets

The past 18 months have brought significant change for all of us and we have had to learn to adapt and to find new ways of doing things, whether shopping online, catching up with friends virtually or attending virtual medical appointments. The workplace has experienced similar changes. The Accenture report, ‘Talent for Tomorrow – Reskilling to Power Ireland’s Economy’, published earlier this year, highlighted the pace of workplace transformation, as well as the constant demand to refresh people’s skills. The report emphasised that; ‘We have the chance to reset upskilling pathways and create a resilient and diverse talent pipeline for Ireland’ – Talent for Tomorrow, Reskilling to Power Ireland’s Economy, 2021.

While many are eager to learn, it can be daunting to know where to start and the right skills to learn. Accenture’s Skills to Succeed programme aims to give everyone the chance to build the essential skills that open doors to employment and economic opportunity.

Central to this programme is its portfolio of free online learning platforms. In a time when new skills are in demand and remote learning is on the rise, these tools give learners the opportunity to build the skills they need to thrive in a digital economy.

Through these free, interactive online learning tools; the Skills to Succeed Academy and Accenture Digital Skills, learners have access to training designed specifically to support people to build their skills and confidence, helping them to enhance their employability and broaden their career prospects. Digital Stepping Stones, developed in partnership with An Cosán, allows learners to evaluate and improve their digital competency and Skills Summary, developed in conjunction with the National Youth Council of Ireland, gives young people the chance to understand and document their transferable skills gained from non-formal learning.

Digital Stepping Stones

Created in collaboration with An Cosán, Ireland’s largest community education provider, Digital Stepping Stones is an online tool which allows people to evaluate their digital level competency, recognising the digital skills they already have and identifying gaps in their knowledge. The tool, based on the European Digital Competence Framework for Citizens, DigComp 2.1, makes it easy for people to find out what digital skills they have and where they need to upskill, to fix any gaps in their personal digital divide. Since its roll out in 2020, the tool has been used across the Further Education & Training sector including Education and Training Boards (ETB) centres, regional Community Training Centres (CTC's) as well as Local Development Companies, Family Resource Centres, local Community Development Projects (CDP's) and organisations meeting specific needs across Ireland. For further information or to arrange a training session, contact Mark Kelly, Digital Inclusion Coordinator, An Cosán at m.kelly@ancosan.ie.

Skills Summary

An online skills assessment tool, Skills Summary created in partnership with National Youth Council of Ireland, allows young people to understand, articulate and document their transferable skills gained from non-formal learning, such as volunteering and youth work. This helps young people to build their confidence, so that they can better communicate the value of these essential skills to future employers.
